What would you do?

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 7, 2008, 8:30 AM

If you couldn't communicate?

The following comes from $Moonbeam13's journal .

That's right - You wake up one morning and you can't speak, you can't move your arms, all that's working is your eyes.. what do you do?

For most of us,I believe this would be a nightmare. Just the inability to log on to deviantART causes me to go into tiny withdrawal modes, so the concept of no communication at all.. is mind numbing.

Communication is key to connection. Without it we feel isolation and excluded from the rest of humanity. The ability to share your feelings and thoughts is priceless and to live without that.. unimaginable.

Except if you are ~GloryAngel - because if you were Sara, this would be your life.

A year ago, Sara was in a terrible car accident and she seemed to come out of it unscathed but while in the hospital being treated, she suffered a stroke.

This stroke made it impossible for Sara to move anything but her eyes and while she now has a machine to help her "speak" using the movement of her eyes it isn't enough to break the isolation.

Sara was an artist, she was one of ours. She was an active member of this community I've been praising and we have the ability to give her a piece of her life back. If we can come together and raise $2500, we can help her family purchase equipment that will allow her to access the web, and even allow her to make art again.

Every year you all come together for $Moonbeam13's breast cancer walk and we've watched you reach out to others in need before and for that I applaud you. If you can do it one more time, we can literally bring art back to an artist. What greater gift is there?

Oh..that's so horrible. I can't even fathom what that must be like. How truly alone I would be, no matter how close a person is. Will she ever recover? Could she ever come close to having the life she had before?

I'll be thinking of her whenever I pray.

It makes you wonder though. What would life be like without any communication at all? If we were just born alone somehow. I think our minds would form and adapt to the change in order for us to cope with the unnatural lifestyle.

What would the world look like, as an outsider looking in?

Thanks for the link. It's times like this that show what friendship really means. I know I'd be there any chance I got if it was my friend that got hurt. I hope that she has friends that will stick by her too.

Shoutboard

FreeRice [link] is a sister site of Poverty.com. Our partners are the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the United Nations World Food Program.

FreeRice has two goals:

1. Provide education to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.

This is made possible by the generosity of the sponsors who advertise on this site.

Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your education can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.

Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.
